About Hearing Aids

Hearing Aid Styles

Hearing aids are available in many different sizes and styles thanks to advancements in digital technology and miniaturization of the internal components. Many of today’s hearing aids are considered sleek, compact, and innovative – offering solutions to a wide range of hearing aid wearers.

At Kalady Audiology, we offer many styles of hearing aids and accessories, providing patients with the most comfortable wearing style and hearing aid experience possible. Below is a list of the most popular hearing aid wearing styles:

Receiver in Canal (RIC)
ric hearing aid style

Although RIC hearing aids do not fit within the ear canal, they are still a very discreet option. With these hearing aids, the receiver sits in the wearer’s ear canal and thin electronic wires lead to an apparatus that sits behind the ear. The portion that sits outside of the ear is typically hidden behind the user’s auricle (or outer ear cartilage) – and is therefore typically unseen.

RIC hearing aids also come in various skin tones or hair shades for those who wish to be discreet, or fun bright colors for those who want to stand out. These hearing aids are suitable for those with mild to moderate hearing loss.

Behind-the-Ear (BTE)

BTE hearing aids are similar to RIC models in that they are worn behind the ear where the technology is housed. Thin plastic tubing runs from the outer portion to an earbud or earmold that is fit into your ear canal. These hearing aids are powerful, and are suitable for those with even the most severe hearing loss.

Invisible in Canal (IIC)
ite hearing aids

Although all modern hearing aids are small and discreet, IIC hearing aids are by far the least detectable. These hearing aids are custom made to fit your ear’s anatomy and fit further into the ear canal than other hearing aid style – thus causing them to become completely invisible. These hearing aids are suitable for those with mild to moderate hearing loss.

Completely in Canal (CIC)
cic hearing aids

Completely-In-Canal hearing aids are similar to IIC in that they are custom made and fit inside your ear canal. Only a very small “tip” of the hearing aid or a small clear plastic “handle” will show with CIC hearing aids. Most people who choose CIC hearing aids report that people typically do not know they are wearing hearing aids. CIC hearing aids are also most suitable for those with mild to moderate hearing loss.

In the Canal (ITC)
ric hearing aid style

ITC hearing aids fit into the ear canal and are custom fit to the wearer. These hearing aids do not fit completely into the ear canal, instead a portion of the hearing aid will be visible in the outer ear. These hearing aids are still quite discreet and typically come in a variety of skin tones for maximum discreetness. These hearing aids are slightly larger and are suitable for those with mild to mildly severe hearing loss.

In the Ear (ITE)

Custom In-The-Ear hearing aids fit within your outer ear and appear a bit larger than ITC hearing aids. They are easy to adjust for those who prefer to make adjustments on their actual hearing devices rather than a controller or app. These hearing aids also typically come in a wide range of skin tones and are suitable for those with mild to severe hearing loss.

Hearing aid maintenance accessories

Your hearing aids require care and maintenance. Regular use of the following items can help ensure that your hearing experiences are second to none. In addition to the cleaning accessories below, it's recommended to visit your audiologist regularly for professional cleaning of your hearing aids.

  • Dehumidifers: A dehumidifier is designed for the maintenance and storage of all types of hearing aids. The device is a maintenance chamber that dries and disinfects your devices. This process kills fungi and bacteria, and it greatly reduces itching and the chance of infections.
  • Cleansing Wipes: Cleansing wipes contain a surface-active agent that is effective against earwax but doesn’t damage hearing aids, helping to facilitate the daily cleaning of your hearing aids.
  • Cleaning Spray: Cleaning spray is specially designed to dissolve earwax quickly, which helps improve sound quality without damaging hearing aids. Cleaning sprays also help prevent skin irritation and eczema.

Dr. Kalady is amazing! I have been wearing hearing aids for 12 years (since my late 50's) and I have never had such an extensive, thorough examination. In addition to being very professional she is also a very good listener. She "hears" your problems and strives to find the very best fit for your hearing needs. It is amazing the adjustments she can make that improve my hearing and give me confidence. I had resigned myself to accepting that my hearing would be a handicap in social situations, missing a lot of what was being said and unable to be a part of the conversations. With her help I can now be a participant again! I highly recommend Kalady Audiology. She's a gem!

I have had diminished hearing for several years, but was unable to get a satisfactory answer about improving it. My GP recommended Kalady Audiology to me.  Dr. Kalady  did a thorough job of testing my hearing and spent a more than adequate amount of time to explain the various options. I have been using the hearing aids  for several months now and I have found that,  not only is my hearing better, but I no longer have to "drop out" of conversations because I don't want to constantly interrupt and ask for someone to repeat everything. An  excellent experience at the office and definitely a better quality of life.   I highly recommend her.

I’m so glad I used Kalady Audiology for my hearing needs. Dr. Kalady's ability to be fully aware of what my needs were made me feel comfortable through the whole process. Another very important point I’d like to make is that she uses “Best practices” to fit hearing aids. Whoever is reading this please google “best practices” for fitting of hearing aids. Dr. Kalady is the only audiologist I was able to find who does this. It’s extremely important in my opinion. Thank you so much Dr. Kalady. I’m so glad I used your services!!

I am completely stunned by how well I can hear with my new hearing aids. I never thought I would ever hear this well. I can hear clearly everything that is said on TV [men or women] and at a very low volume. My wife is absolutely thrilled with my ability to hear her and the low volume on the TV. My sports car has a totally different sound than it had with my old aids. My old aids made everything sound loud, but it was hard to understand what was being said. Dr. Kalady is the best!
